- Quick Answer: Rhaenyra Targaryen parallels Daenerys through her claim to the throne, dragon power, and a growing god complex driven by Aegon's prophecy, leading her toward tyranny.
The battle for the Iron Throne will be more intense in House of the Dragon Season 3, and fans will see how Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) will echo Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) story from Game of Thrones.
As Daenerys became the Mad Queen in the mothership series’ final season, a major shift is expected in Rhaenyra in the prequel’s upcoming third installment. So how will this unfold?
How will Rhaenyra Become Like Daenerys in House of the Dragon Season 3?

In Entertainment Weekly’s cover story of House of the Dragon Season 3, Emma D’Arcy revealed her character Rhaenyra would be undergoing a “movement towards tyranny.”
So, from a sympathetic character, the new season will feature a major change in her character.
How does this liken Rhaenyra to Daenerys? They are not just both Targaryen women. They, too, are both claiming the Iron Throne, not to mention, both have dragons to help them fulfill their cause and have the guts to fight for what they think is theirs.
“I think in Rhaenyra’s case, it’s a kind of religious fanaticism, actually, that starts to radicalize her position,” D’Arcy said about her role.
Evidently, the two have huge similarities. And just like Daenerys, Rhaenyra will take King’s Landing in House of the Dragon Season 3.
Hopefully, it won’t be on the same level of destruction as Daenerys did in Game of Thrones. However, with her more active role and scenes where she’s flying her dragon, Syrax, in the trailer, there will surely be more fire and blood to be involved.
While some may see this as a major change in Rhaenyra’s character, this shift is actually just waiting to happen, and the show has been building for years.
Will Rhaenyra Become a Mad Queen Like Daenerys?

Aegon the Conqueror’s (Tom Glynn-Carney) dream, also known as his Song of Ice and Fire, introduces a major change to Game of Thrones canon and what was previously established about the Conquest, the White Walkers, and how only a Targaryen on the Iron Throne could unite the realm to defeat them.
Despite not being the Prince That Was Promised, Rhaenyra is confident that she could be one.
King Viserys (Paddy Considine) himself told her this prophecy when he named her his heir, and it has stayed with her ever since.
So, with this prophecy and Team Black’s growing number of dragons, Rhaenyra has developed a god complex.
She strongly believes she will save humanity while also being queen–a divine figure who alone has the right to rule.
With this belief, Rhaenyra is willing to do whatever it takes to claim what she believes is hers.
“I wanted to see what happens when that character stops having to apologize,” D’Arcy added about her role.
These elements can be compared to Daenerys’ descent into ruthlessness in Game of Thrones.
While it remains to be seen whether Rhaenyra will become the Mad Queen like Daenerys, she will not be called “Rhaenyra the Cruel” by her detractors for nothing. So fans will have to see how she lives up to this reputation in House of the Dragon going forward.
House of the Dragon will premiere on June 21, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
