Hughie has surprisingly uncovered the true identity of fake Annie in The Boys season 4 finale, but how did he do it? It was difficult to tell the difference between Starlight and the shapeshifter, but there's nothing like a trail of clues to show Hughie who he's dealing with.

Shapeshifting Supe Could've Had It All But...

The first clue was as clear as day the minute the fake Annie tried her Starlight costume on when they got home in the previous episode.

But to Hughie — it took a bit more time, considering he's had enough Supe problems to deal with.

Thanks to The Boys season 4 finale, Hughie was able to figure it out on time.

Out of the blue, the fake Annie decided to flaunt a blue wedding dress to Hughie. In the process, she pops the question about marriage, prompting Hughie to pull out that he had been hiding his wedding ring to get the timing right.

Unfortunately, everything went downhill from that point forward.

During the investigation with M.M., Hughie notices how much the fake Annie has been sweating. What ticked him off was finding her line, "It's like a furnace in here" familiar...

Hughie Wasn't Caught in Her Web of Lies, After All

The real Annie manages to escape from lockdown and fights off the fake Annie alongside Hughie and the others. However, the problem between them remains.

Despite Annie feeling betrayed at how easily Hughie believed the shapeshifting Supe, Hughie lists down the qualities of "fake Annie" that he should've noticed during the ten days she stayed with him:

The fake Annie wore designer dresses at home when the real Annie would've "ditched bra for sweats", the fake found her car keys on the first try when the real Annie wouldn't have, and finally: the fact that the fake one was sweating.

"You have always been and always will be 90% pashmina," which means 2 things: the real Annie is usually cold, not hot, and she was probably the warmth Hughie was always looking for when they got home.

It remains to be seen if Annie would be able to trust him again, but for now, they have a lot to work on in the upcoming fifth season.
