- Quick Answer: Denis Villeneuve promises Dune: Part Three will feel distinct with a 17-year time jump, focusing on Paul Atreides' tyranny, new pacing, and paranoid isolation.
Director Denis Villeneuve teases a major shift in the upcoming Dune: Part Three compared to the first two films.
Although it is the third installment in the franchise, Villeneuve previously revealed that the movie would “feel different” and have “its own identity.”
So, what will make Dune: Part Three different from its predecessors, and why did Villeneuve decide to take that approach? The filmmaker explained.
How Will Dune: Part Three Change the Franchise?

Dune: Part Three is one of the most anticipated releases of 2026 and is being considered the “epic conclusion” of the saga.
While the film continues Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) journey as he navigates the dangers of Arrakis, it will feature a 17-year time jump.
By the looks of it, the story will pick up after Paul’s holy war, when he has fully become the Emperor of the galaxy, leaving a wake of tyranny behind him. So, while this premise may seem familiar, Denis Villeneuve revealed that the third film would be different.
“The idea was to try to make a movie that will have the same DNA – it’s a Dune movie – but it’s a very different movie,” he told Empire. “It has a different pacing.”
Although the same characters will return, including Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, among others, the world they inhabit will have changed.
“Their psyches, their perspective on reality, have totally changed, and Paul is living with the burden of what he created, trying to find a way out of this spiral of violence,” he continued.
Talking about Paul’s descent into darkness, Villeneuve explained that the third film would see the character evolve in entirely new ways.
“That phrase ‘anti-hero’ gets thrown around a little too loosely perhaps, but it’s fantastic to chew on as an actor, where it’s not purely redemptive,” he continued.
He also described Dune: Part Three as “its own beast,” adding that it would tell “its own story” and explore themes of “siege” and “paranoid isolation.”
With its changed world, evolved characters, and different pacing, Dune: Part Three promises to deliver a new perspective on Paul’s story as the saga reaches its epic conclusion.
Why Is Denis Villeneuve Only Making Three Dune Movies?

Based on Frank Herbert’s series, the saga originally spanned six novels, but Denis Villeneuve only intended to make three films out of it.
Dune: Part Three adapts the second novel, Dune Messiah, where Paul Atreides is no longer the hero his people know him to be but already an Emperor who has started a devastating holy war that killed 61 individuals across the galaxy.
While the story of Paul could still continue on the big screen, the third movie was the end for Villeneuve.
“I said, ‘Maybe it’s a good idea to go back to this project, not out of nostalgia, not because I miss it, but the opposite – I’m tired of it,’” he explained. “I want to make sure that I will be severe with the material. That I will not be complacent.”
Villeneuve even revealed that he wanted to do something “very powerful” that would work like a “rocket to pull me away from Arrakis.”
So when asked if he would do the next James Bond movie, he simply said, “Okay, this is what I need.”
True enough, Amazon MGM Studios officially announced Villeneuve as the director for the upcoming 26th James Bond movie.
So from the world of spice, space, and sandworms, Villeneuve is ready to jump into the espionage world of spies, secret agents, intelligence agencies, and covert missions.
Dune: Part Three is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18.
