- Quick Answer: Duncan Idaho returns in Dune: Part III as Hayt, a genetically engineered clone called a ghola created by the mysterious Bene Tleilax society.
The second official trailer for Dune: Part III is here, and as expected, it's packed with action, emotion, and the return of several fan-favorite characters, including Duncan Idaho.
Played by Jason Momoa, the Ginaz Swordmaster sacrificed himself in the first film to help Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) escape the Sardaukar. So, how does Duncan Idaho return in Dune: Part III?
How Is Duncan Idaho Alive Again in Dune: Part III?

Duncan Idaho died in Dune: Part One after sacrificing himself to hold off the Emperor's Sardaukar troops, allowing Paul Atreides to escape.
However, in the Dune: Part Three trailer, his voice can be heard before he finally appears kneeling before Paul in the Atreides throne room. So, how is he back?
To clarify, Duncan is still dead. The Jason Momoa character seen in the trailer is actually Hayt, an advanced clone grown from Duncan's original cells. In the Dune universe, this type of clone is known as a ghola, created by the Bene Tleilax.
The Tleilax are a secretive society of genetically engineered humans that specialize in advanced biotechnology and genetic engineering. Using their mysterious axlotl tanks, they regrow Duncan's body as Hayt. However, one noticeable difference is his eyes, which have been replaced with a distinctive metallic design.
The Tleilax are also capable of modifying their gholas by embedding specific abilities, instincts, and behaviors into their genetic makeup.
But despite Hayt's uncanny resemblance to Duncan, he is not the same person. He has no memories of Duncan's previous life, although he has been told that he was once a Swordmaster–the greatest of his time–and a loyal member of House Atreides.
Unlike Duncan, however, Hayt's loyalty is far more complicated. He is part of a larger conspiracy against Emperor Paul. Although he initially claims to have arrived to deliver a proposal of peace, he later warns Paul that his true purpose is to destroy him and bring down his empire.
How Important is Duncan Idaho’s Character in Dune: Part III?

Known as Hayt in Dune: Part Three, Duncan Idaho will play an important role in the upcoming film.
WARNING: BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD.
The novel Dune Messiah, on which the third movie is based, features a major twist: despite being programmed to destroy House Atreides, Hayt ultimately saves Paul and Chani's (Zendaya) twin children, Leto II and Ghanima.
While it remains to be seen whether this storyline will be adapted for the big screen, the trailer suggests the film may be following that direction.
Dune Messiah is the second novel in Frank Herbert's six-book Dune series. In the third novel, Children of Dune, Duncan becomes one of the story's central characters. He is paired with Paul's sister, Alia (Anya Taylor-Joy), and serves as the protector of Leto II and Ghanima.
However, it remains unclear whether Denis Villeneuve will continue the franchise beyond Dune: Part III, as he has previously said the third film will be the final installment in his Dune trilogy.
Dune: Part III is set to hit the big screen on December 18, 2026.
