Could Spider-Man: Far From Home Be Setting Up Spider-Verse?

The Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer has teased a lot of exciting stuff for the future of Marvel Cinematic Universe. This includes one of the most iconic comic book storylines based on the wall-crawler being brought to life.

The trailer teases that Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, comes from another world. Peter Parker's eyes light up as he thinks about the possible existence of the multiverse. Popular geek culture expert and YouTuber Charlie Schneider aka Emergency Awesome notes the word "dimension" being thrown around in this trailer.

Nick Fury specifically used the term and a lot of people would like to think that this may be a hint of what's to come for the Spider-Man character. After all, the mention of alternate dimensions involving Spidey could easily be a nod to Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, a video game that inspired the Spider-Verse comic book stories in the comics, which in turn became the basis for the hit animated film, Into the Spider-Verse. Mysterio figured prominently in that story as well as four Spider-Men from alternate realities namely Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, and Ultimate Spider-Man.

For now, however, it looks like the focus is on introducing the Sinister Six first teased in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Either way, Schneider still believes that a Spider-Verse is no doubt on the agenda with Sony hoping to build its own and eventually find an excuse to bring Tom Holland's version of Spider-Man to the Venom-verse.

However, the general speculation is that Mysterio is lying about his intentions so the alternate world thing might not even be true. He could simply be trying to win Spider-Man's trust just to throw him under the bus. This is true to the villainous comic book origins of the character although Spider-Man: Far From Home is using the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits the theaters July 2, 2019.
