It looks like Spider-Man: Far From Home has been designated with the important task of carrying the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe into a new era. The new trailer hints on big stories and changes to come as well as answers and clarifications to loose threads built in Phase 3 including one that involves Captain Marvel.
Although we always referred to her as Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers technically hasn't gotten that name yet in the MCU. Even on Avengers: Endgame, she still wasn't addressed this way. It is only in Spider-Man: Far From Home that Brie Larson's character officially gets the Captain Marvel moniker.
In the trailer for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, Nick Fury interrupts Peter Parker's vacation with his friends to recruit him to help another world from which Mysterio apparently comes from a deal with the threats of the Elementals.
However, his desire to chill out for once she reels from the events of Avengers: Endgame, he wasn't too thrilled about the idea and suggested other superheroes that can be of help. He asked about Carol but referred to her as Captain Marvel, which is the first time mention in-universe.
It doesn't seem like Peter came up with the name and it looks like she was being called that way before, just not on-screen. Carol was bound to adopt that name anyway, it's just that it hasn't been made official yet. Either Nick Fury or Monica Rambeau is speculated to give her the name, but we might not get to see that moment happen until the Captain Marvel sequel.
Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow
In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter picks up the slack following the death of Iron Man. It looks like he's pulling double duty ever since, but has for once decided to take a break and just be with his friends including Zendaya's MJ, who he has developed romantic feelings for.
The film is expected to give us some teasers of what the Phase of MCU might look like since it is Spider-Man: Far From Home, not Avengers: Endgame, that serves as the final movie in the current phase. The idea of a multiverse has been hinted at, which opens up a lot of opportunities to bring alternate versions of the characters we both know and love.
Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit the theaters July 2, 2019.
