- Quick Answer: Hulu ordered Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot to series, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as new agents investigating unexplained cases.
Ryan Coogler's modern reboot of The X-Files is officially moving forward, with Hulu giving it a series order.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has been working on a new version of the iconic TV series in the last few years, with a pilot shot earlier this year. Fans have been wondering whether the project will move forward, or if Hulu will pull the plug, similar to the canned Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series.
Ryan Coogler's The X-Files Reboot Receives Series Order from Hulu
Variety confirmed that Hulu has officially given a series order to the reboot of The X-Files spearheaded by Oscar winner Ryan Coogler.
The reimagining of the iconic series will follow two new characters played by Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel. They play "two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena."
Coogler directed the pilot episode, which was shot earlier this year, and he will be involved as an executive producer of the series moving forward. Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner, while original series creator Chris Carter is also involved as one of the executive producers.
"I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me. What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world," Coogler said in a statement.
"Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience."
It remains unknown when the series is planning to premiere, but there is a possibility that production for the rest of the first season will begin next year.
Are the Original Stars Returning in the Reboot?

One of the biggest questions that fans have is whether original stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will be returning in the reboot.
In an interview with Polygon last August, Chris Carter claimed that they will have a role in the new version of the series, although he declined to give specific details about their appearances.
"At least Gillian, I think, is going to appear in the Coogler version. And I'm assuming David will too, so you will see Mulder and Scully there," the creator said.
While the original characters will return, Carter did not specify whether the reboot will continue the events of the original series or if it is more standalone.
"I don't know. When I see it, I'll know, and so will the Fox executives. They'll have a sense if these things are going to be in competition or if they are going to be complementary," he said.
