  • Quick Answer: Kathryn Newton and Robert Downey Jr. praised Avengers: Doomsday, calling it fantastic and suggesting it will surpass high expectations to redeem the franchise.

Kathryn Newton, who plays Cassie Lang in the MCU, and Robert Downey Jr., who portrays Doctor Doom, have both praised Avengers: Doomsday, teasing that it is an unexpectedly great addition to the MCU.

Following the phenomenal success of Avengers: Endgame, which remains Marvel Studios' highest-grossing film with more than $2.8 billion at the worldwide box office, along with widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades, Doomsday has enormous expectations to meet.

But can the next Avengers blockbuster surpass or even match Endgame's legacy?

Kathryn Newton is set to return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, and she says the experience exceeded her expectations.

“It was better,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

However, like many Marvel stars, the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star was careful not to reveal any spoilers. Still, she couldn't help but praise directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

“I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but the Russo brothers love these movies,” she continued.

Just as she seemed ready to reveal more, Newton caught herself.

“I felt it, and I felt empowered. I think they made … I don’t want to say anything,” she said.

While Newton didn't elaborate on what happens in the film, her use of the word "empowered" may reassure fans who were concerned about the apparent absence of several prominent female MCU stars during Marvel Studios' recent San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Although she stopped short of revealing any plot details, Newton's comments suggest that Doomsday will continue to give its female characters meaningful moments to shine.

Kathryn Newton isn't the only Marvel star who has praised Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. also spoke highly of the film when asked whether he had seen a cut of it.

“I’m on the inside track, and it is absolutely fantastic,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Comparing the footage to the Avengers: Doomsday trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con, Downey suggested the finished film goes far beyond what fans have already seen.

“It’s like that except extra, and I’ll sidebar with all of you. I think we may redeem ourselves yet,” he teased.

For years, the MCU has been criticized for superhero fatigue following Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, with many fans feeling Marvel Studios prioritized quantity over quality. This led to several underperforming films and lower-rated Disney+ series.

The rapid rollout of Disney+ shows alongside feature films also made it harder for viewers to keep up, with some feeling they had to watch everything just to understand the overall story.

Combined with rushed production schedules, weaker scripts, and an overreliance on CGI, many believe the MCU lost some of its appeal. With RDJ's tease, however, it looks like Marvel may finally be able to redeem itself.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
