A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Targaryen Family Tree Explained: How Everyone Connects

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has finally premiered on HBO, introducing a new branch of the Targaryen family to the realm.

While the prequel primarily follows the knight Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), during their time at a tournament at Ashford Meadow, the series will eventually bring members of House Targaryen into the spotlight.

To avoid confusion, here’s a breakdown of the Targaryen family tree in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and how these characters connect to the original series Game of Thrones and the earlier prequel House of the Dragon.

King Daeron II Targaryen

In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, King Daeron II Targaryen rules Westeros. Set 70 years after House of the Dragon, he is the great-grandson of Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).

While fans won’t actually meet him onscreen, Daeron remains a looming presence due to his lasting influence over the realm.

He helped shape the Westeros seen in the series. Thanks to his reign, the kingdom has enjoyed a period of relative peace after he ended the Blackfyre Rebellion and peacefully brought Dorne into the Seven Kingdoms.

After all, he wasn’t given the title “Daeron the Good” for nothing.

King Daeron II has four sons with his wife, the Dornish princess Myriah Martell, but only Baelor (Bertie Carvel) and Maekar (Sam Spruell) play significant roles in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

As the eldest, Baelor is not only the heir to the Iron Throne but also serves as the Hand of the King –widely respected for his wisdom, fairness, and sense of justice.

Baelor has two sons, though only Prince Valarr (Oscar Morgan) appears in the series.

Maekar, on the other hand, is far more severe than his brother. Known as the Prince of Summerhall, he has six children, many of whom will play major roles in the series.

Prince Aerion

Maekar’s children are Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, Daella, Aegon, and Rhae, but A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focuses only on his sons.

His eldest, Daeron (Henry Ashton), also known as Daeron the Drunken, possesses the prophetic dragon-dreaming gift – much like House of the Dragon’s Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban).

Next is Aerion (Finn Bennett), who fits the classic “mad” Targaryen mold, believing he is a dragon in human form. He even calls himself “Aerion Brightflame” and is rarely seen without his unusual helmet.

Maekar is also the father of Maester Aemon, later seen at Castle Black in Game of Thrones.

While Aemon has yet to appear in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as he is still studying for his maester chain in Oldtown, his eventual inclusion will strengthen the series’ connection to the broader franchise.

With only the premiere episode released so far, there is much more to uncover about the Targaryen family, further deepening the show’s ties to Westeros’ history.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs every Sunday on HBO and streams on HBO Max.
