The Targaryen family can be an overwhelming lineage to belong to, which is exactly why we get to witness Prince Aegon V Targaryen outside his family fortress. In George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk & Egg, aka A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, he is described as having shaved his head. So, why is Egg bald in the new addition to the Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon universe?

Why Does Egg Have a Shaved Head in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Welcome back to Westeros! Except this time, we don't focus on the politics, nor the houses we had already witnessed in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms instead follows the adventures of the young, giant hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk), and his clever squire, Egg.

If there's one thing the Targaryens are most known for, it's their golden lock of hair. That is the one necessary price that Aegon V Targaryen (aka Egg) had to pay to live a normal life outside of his home. In this case, this is why he now has a shaved head in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Egg knew what he had to do to escape his overbearing family: shave his head and form a new identity, which was to become a squire to Ser Duncan the Tall, in hopes of being trained as a knight. Aegon would set off to live a much humbler and simpler life than how his brothers, Aerion and Daeron, were raised.

This was key, after all, in becoming the future King Aegon V, the ruler who refused to bow to Targaryen traditions and would soon enforce a new world according to his vision.

Set 90 years before A Song of Ice and Fire, the tales of Dunk and Egg are far less brutal and political compared to the flagship series, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Instead, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is lighter, more character-driven, with buddy comedy taking the lead for its overall theme of the story.

While it's still rated TV-MA for its violence and tournaments, Dunk and Egg's adventures have undoubtedly lower stakes in a much smaller scope of Westeros.

The first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuted today on HBO Max, with episode 2 slated for release on January 25, 2026.
