The over-two-minute Yellowjackets Season 4 trailer focuses on the girls’ return to civilization. But just when they thought the nightmare was over, it was only beginning, and it would probably be even worse.

Set to a haunting rendition of Alanis Morissette's “Ironic,” a young Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) admits that being back feels surreal, as if she is living a different life, while delivering a speech at school.

As the school administrator calls them “heroes” and “survivors,” the trailer transitions between the surviving girls' return to their hometown and their adult lives. Meanwhile, Melissa’s (Hilary Swank) partner, Alex (Jaylee Hamidi), warns about the terrifying history the girls share.

From family reunions to returning to school, the girls continue to be haunted by their past, with their unresolved trauma following them from their teenage years into adulthood. By the looks of it, the wilderness has never really let them go.

As the events take an increasingly intense turn, the horror also unfolds through scenes of a burning car, Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) hitting someone, a man drowning, and Shauna seemingly preparing to shoot Misty (Christina Ricci).

With what appears to be several potentially deadly confrontations, teenage Taissa continues her speech, saying, “More than anything, we survived because of love.”

As the final season brings the survivors face-to-face with the consequences of their past, their biggest challenge may be discovering whether they can ever truly escape the wilderness and the people they became there.

Yellowjackets

After airing for four seasons over five years, there’s no denying that Yellowjackets has become one of the most intricate series of today, with fans casting different theories about what really happened to the girls after returning to civilization.

During its three-season run, the show has intentionally avoided fully revealing their lives after being rescued from the wilderness, leaving the mystery surrounding their transition back to society unexplored.

In fact, co-creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson admitted to The A.V. Club that working on the series finale was the most “frightening thing we’ve contended with over the course of making this show.”

“There are TV endings that go down in history as either incredible or incredibly disappointing. It’s intimidating,” Lyle said.

Despite that, the husband-and-wife duo is confident about the series finale, although they didn't reveal what is yet to come.

“We knew the ending we wanted, even though the specifics kept shifting and evolving. But I felt good about the place that we got to,” Nickerson added.

While the final season will see the girls returning to their hometown, it seems that the place no longer feels like home. So, why did it take four seasons for the show to finally explore their return to civilization?

Lyle and Nickerson explained that they wanted to take the time to explore how the teens adjusted and grew into the adults viewers met in the series' pilot. “It’s a full loop,” Lyle teased.

“The biggest mystery is how they became the way they were, and what it was like to be back in a cage or a box [after the wilderness],” she added.

With the final season finally exploring the survivors' lives beyond the wilderness, viewers may finally get the answers they've been waiting for.
