Matt Damon and David Letterman made shocking cameo appearances in the fourth season premiere episode of The Gilded Age.
The hit HBO period drama series recently premiered its new season, setting up new stakes and storylines for the Russells and their cohorts in 1880s New York City. Fans are looking forward to seeing what they have in store for the show's return, but as it turns out, the premiere already had a major surprise for audiences.
Matt Damon and David Letterman's Cameo in The Gilded Age Season 4 Premiere
In the recently aired fourth-season premiere of The Gilded Age, Matt Damon and David Letterman surprisingly made an appearance as they showed up as extras in one scene.
At the 8:33 mark, the A-list star and the legendary TV host/comedian can be seen playing two gentlemen who are crossing the street together.
This might be jarring for fans, given that they are two recognizable stars, and you might be wondering why they decided to appear as extras in the hit show. As it turns out, there is a story behind it.
In an interview with Vulture, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman showrunner Isabel Richardson revealed that the opportunity came up as part of Damon's guest appearance on the talk show, which will air later this year.
After Letterman learned that Damon and his best friend Ben Affleck started as background extras, The Odyssey star agreed to do a segment about it for the show.
Richardson explained, "We thought, ‘OK, this could be the perfect opportunity.’ It’d be really fun for Dave to do this with Academy Award winner Matt Damon, and it tied into his origin story really well."
Through a mutual connection, they managed to contact HBO and the team behind The Gilded Age to make the opportunity happen.
"It was a kind of hysterical moment when our production supervisor Leah Baker came up to me on set and was like, ‘Well, I have a kind of funny, interesting question: Would you like Dave Letterman and Matt Damon to be background on our set one day?’ I just started laughing," executive producer Kate Churchill recalled.
"[We thought it was] hysterical. The only way I could think of was if we did it in a very controlled manner and it was a shot that we needed, so there was a high chance of it making the cut."
