X-Men: Dark Phoenix was a commercial flop for Fox and Disney, which is pretty sad since the film represents the end of an era, being the franchise's last film under Fox. There were a lot of factors against it if we're being honest, whether it be first time director Simon Kinberg, the fact that they were redoing The Dark Phoenix Saga again like X-Men: The Last Stand, and Disney purchasing Fox basically killing whatever momentum this film had.
Still, this film definitely had some cool ideas before some massive reshoots were done to make it less similar to Captain Marvel. Aside from a similar ending, where a powered up Jean Grey would mark Earth as her territory, we also would have seen this universe's version of Skrulls, an alien race that also appeared in Captain Marvel.
The Skrulls look like an interesting mix of Swamp Thing and, well, actual Skrulls from the comics if the Dark Phoenix concept art of David Masson. This is only one artist's interpretation of these aliens but we all know that they never made it to the movie anyway. It would have been fun to imagine what could have been but this is a film X-Men fans are gonna have to live with.
If fans are curious, they can pick up X-Men: Dark Phoenix on Blu-Ray on September 17.
