SPOILER WARNING: This article includes spoilers for the second season finale of X-Men '97, so proceed with caution.
Which Fan-Favorite Villain Appeared in X-Men '97 Season 2 Finale Post-Credits Scene?

Mystique made her long-awaited return in the post-credits scene of the second season finale of X-Men '97. She has been absent from the revival series up to this episode, though she had been mentioned by characters.
In the post-credit sequence, the fan-favorite villain breaks into Dr. Valerie Cooper’s office and sifts through her confidential files. She ultimately executes Cooper, signaling her plan to covertly impersonate the government liaison's identity in the third season.
At the same time, a news broadcast during the scene confirms that Graydon Creed has been elected as the new U.S. president. While mutants previously had a somewhat empathetic ally in Robert Kelly, his replacement by a rabidly anti-mutant extremist ensures a dangerous surge in public hatred and fear next season.
While the teaser sets up a bigger stake for the mutants next season, it's still an exciting moment for fans since it confirmed that Mystique still exists in the show's world and she will have a major role in the third season, which will air next year.
The question now is what kind of involvement Mystique will have in the storyline for the third season, especially now that the mutants will have to face a president that has prejudice against them and what is seemingly the reintroduction of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
What Happened in the X-Men Season 2 Finale?

Desperate to permanently eliminate Apocalypse, X-Force and X-Factor set out to kill Gambit, whose body the villain had hijacked. To stop this, Beast, Rogue, and Nightcrawler investigated the wreckage of Ship, leading Rogue into a Celestial Shrine to confront Eson, the cosmic entity who originally empowered En Sabah Nur.
While the X-Men bought time against a siege led by Dr. Cooper at X-Corp, Eson tested Rogue’s resolve. When she willingly offered her life for Gambit out of love, Eson granted her Celestial power for one final battle.
Meanwhile, chaos erupted across the battlefield. Storm and Forge battled human-controlled Sentinels, Wolverine and Morph took on Archangel and Psylocke, and Cable faced off against his parents. Despite Polaris and Bishop getting overwhelmed by X-Factor, a briefly awakened Gambit stepped in to help.
However, Cable brought down the tower and shot Gambit in the head to destroy Apocalypse. Instead, the fatal shot backfired, accelerating Apocalypse’s full reawakening and allowing him to mind-control both the X-Men and X-Force, leaving Charles Xavier isolated.
Just as all hope seemed lost, a newly empowered Rogue arrived. She cleansed her allies' minds, stripped Apocalypse from Gambit, and sealed the villain’s subconscious inside a crystal that she entrusted to Cable. Rogue and Gambit finally shared a kiss as Nightcrawler convinced Eson to sacrifice himself to save Rogue's life, stripping her of the cosmic powers while leaving her unharmed.
With the battle won, the team was left facing a grim political future. Mystique assassinated Dr. Cooper and secretly assumed her identity, just as the anti-mutant politician Graydon Creed was elected President.
