- Quick Answer: X-Men '97 Season 3 is in active production, with Marvel targeting an annual release schedule to eliminate long waiting periods between future seasons.
X-Men '97 producer Larry Houston has shared an exciting update on the release of the animated series' third season ahead of Season 2's debut.
After the first season became a critical hit and earned widespread acclaim, Marvel Studios renewed the series for a third and fourth season.
Although fans endured a lengthy wait for Season 2, the gap before Season 3 could be significantly shorter.
Why X-Men '97 Season 3 Could Arrive Much Sooner

X-Men '97 Season 1 premiered in 2024, but fans had to wait more than two years for the second season to arrive.
The lengthy gap was largely due to production delays and creative restructuring following the dismissal of original head writer and showrunner Beau DeMayo, which occurred before the series even debuted.
After DeMayo's departure, Matthew Chauncey was brought in as the new showrunner, overseeing rewrites and other creative adjustments to the season.
Fortunately, producer Larry Houston says fans shouldn't expect the same delay for Season 3.
"Luckily, the production problems won't occur again. There was a huge gap of time between [Season] 1 and 2," Houston told The Direct. "They've learned their lessons, so with [Seasons] 3 and 4, that won't happen again... That was a one-off."
Houston, who also worked on the original X-Men animated series, isn't the only one to offer an encouraging update.
Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, has also confirmed that X-Men '97 Season 3 is already in production.
He added that the studio's goal is to release a new season every year, suggesting that the wait between future installments should be much shorter.
When Will X-Men '97 Season 2 Be Released?

X-Men '97 Season 2 will premiere with a special three-episode debut on Wednesday, July 1, on Disney+, followed by weekly episode releases through the season finale on August 12.
Marvel Animation has also unveiled the full release schedule and episode titles, offering fans their first clues about what lies ahead.
Episode Number | Title | Release Date |
|---|---|---|
Episode 1 | Days of Past Future | July 1 |
Episode 2 | A Force to be Reckoned With | July 1 |
Episode 3 | Rise of Apocalypse - Part I | July 1 |
Episode 4 | Rise of Apocalypse - Part II | July 8 |
Episode 5 | Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs | July 15 |
Episode 6 | Danger.exe | July 22 |
Episode 7 | Strange Land, Savage Heart | July 29 |
Episode 8 | The Dead Man’s Hand | August 5 |
Episode 9 | Survival of the Fittest | August 12 |
With the episode titles now revealed, fans have already begun theorizing about what's to come. In particular, Episode 8, "The Dead Man's Hand," has sparked speculation that Gambit could return from the dead.
Given Apocalypse's history of resurrecting fallen or vulnerable mutants as his Horsemen, many believe Gambit could be reborn as the Horseman of Death, setting up a major conflict for the X-Men.
Episode 6, "Danger.exe," is also drawing attention. The title appears to reference Danger, the sentient manifestation of the X-Men's iconic Danger Room. If so, it could signal that one of the team's greatest threats will emerge from within their own headquarters.
X-Men '97 Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.
