Will there be another Divergent movie? The franchise has been all but forgotten for years, but, as the movie series never reached a proper conclusion, fans will inevitably wonder whether a final film could ever be possible. Here's everything you need to know about the Divergent film series.

Divergent Movie 4: Will There Be One?

Based on Veronica Roth's YA Dystopian book trilogy of the same name, Divergent first hit our screens in 2014. Insurgent followed in 2015, adapting the second book in the trilogy, with a third movie, Allegiant, coming out in 2016.

This means there should not be another movie, correct? Well, this would have been the case, had the series not fallen victim to the early/mid 2010s trend of splitting the adaptation of a book series' final installment into two. Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games are all known for having done so, and it makes sense that other franchises tried to follow suit.

Unfortunately, Divergent didn't manage to hold up to the high standards set by other dystopian series of the time, such as The Hunger Games. The book knew great popularity when such YA dystopian concepts were reigning supreme in the literature scene. While the series did seem to fit this formula of success, it aged less well than others, largely due to poorer reception and a less original storyline.

The first installment in the movie series made some noise, and the second was generally favorably received, but things turned a bit messy by 2016. Separating Allegiant into two films, Allegiant, and Ascendant didn't turn out to be a great choice. Allegiant wasn't as well-received, partly due to being this awkward half-adaptation of a grand finale, Divergent were already wearing off.

Following the poor box office of the Allegiant film, Ascendant which was initially scheduled for a 2018 release, never came out. When the idea of another cinematic release was dropped, a tv film was proposed instead. This was supposed to be turned into a series that would expand on other characters' stories as well.

Unfortunately for fans, this wasn't something the cast was interested in. Actor Woodley, who portrayed Tris Prior, the main character pointed out that she never signed up for a tv series and she was therefore not considering it. This sentiment was likely shared by the rest of the cast, meaning that another film in the franchise is highly unlikely.

We won't go so far as to say that Divergent is one of the 2010s YA book series that would rather forget an adaptation ever existed. Even so, any fans who are still wondering about the rest of the series had better read the books to get the whole picture.
