Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for the Twilight Out of Focus manga series, so proceed with caution.

Do Mao and Hisashi Break Their Promise?

In the pilot episode of the BL anime, second-year high school students Mao and Hisashi promised three things in front of the camera.

First, Mao promised that he would never divulge Hisashi’s secret—that he’s gay and he’s dating someone—to avoid complications and/or straining their relationship.

Second, Hisashi promised that he would not look at Mao as a potential romantic interest or lay hands on him no matter what happened. Third, they won’t get in each other’s way whenever they need to do their thing.

Should someone break this promise, they will have to move out of the dorms and find another roommate to stay with.

As the plot unfolded, it was Mao who suddenly became aware of Hisashi and what he truly meant to him. Hisashi followed through after deciding to break his long-time relationship with his former teacher.

Despite this, no one moved out of the dorms and they decided to continue rooming with one another.

So, Will Mao and Hisashi End up Together in the BL Series?

Yes, Mao and Hisashi end up together in the first part of the Twilight Out of Focus manga series.

After Mao realized that he liked Hisashi, he tried hard to contain his feelings for Hisashi out of respect for his relationship with his then-boyfriend.

However, as soon as Hisashi realized he was also in love with Mao, he easily broke his relationship with his teacher and returned to Mao’s arms.

They agreed to start a new relationship, not as friends but as intimate lovers who respect each other’s likes and interests.

Their feelings soon affected Mao’s club activities due to Hisashi being paired with another guy, but in the end, they managed to pull through thanks to Hisashi’s assurances.

They kissed a lot in the manga series and even did the deed due to their intimate feelings.

Following Hisashi’s gig with the film club, he decided to join the drama club, not because he likes his fellow actor, but because he constantly wants to be filmed and seen by Mao.

Currently, Twilight Out of Focus has five parts that feature different BL couples. It is still ongoing, which means there’s a chance that Mao and Hisashi’s story could continue in the future.
