Does the galaxy far, far away have more space for animated projects? With The Bad Batch ending its third season, Star Wars fans are left with nothing to look forward to in the animation department. Well, Lucasfilm's Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni, shed light on its future.

Has Lucasfilm Animation Come to the End of Its Era?

This year, Disney President Bob Iger mandated that Star Wars slow down its major production studios. However, Dave Filoni spoke at this year's San Diego Comic Con to reassure fans that animation is not going anywhere!

"I thought my job at Lucasfilm Animation would last about two years – it has now been 20," Filoni said, "This is truly possible because of the incredible dedication and hard work of the many talented people who have worked at Lucasfilm Animation."

Filoni added that no one other than George Lucas predicted that fans would believe in Star Wars' animated world, "[George Lucas] always believed in animation and believed in our team. He said, 'Dare to be great,' and that's what we've done for the last 20 years. I hope we do it for 20 more."

Star Wars may have been built on original and sequel trilogies on the big screens, but there is no doubt that fans appreciated the wider exploration of the galaxy far, far away through showing their animated counterparts on Disney+.

With the likes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels building the franchise mythology and history books, it's impossible to think that animation would lose its streak in the market. Not to mention, how The Bad Batch fans are yearning for more episodes even after its third season run.

So, here's a little rundown of what fans can expect in the next few years.

What Animated Shows Can Star Wars Fans Look Forward To?

The next 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation will kickstart in 2026 with Star Wars: Maul-Shadow Lord, which was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration Japan earlier this year.

This newest addition will be set after the final season of The Clone Wars, following Maul (portrayed by Sam Witwer) as he "rises again to lead the underworld factions" and is determined to "rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire."

For those unaware, Darth Maul was a Zabrak from Dathomir, a powerful Sith Lord who had been trained in the ways of the dark side of the Force as Darth Sidious's first apprentice. Through his own strength, he defeated the likes of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn.

There is no official release date for Star Wars: Maul-Shadow Lord yet, but it's set sometime in 2026. Stay tuned for more updates on this story!
