  • Quick Answer: Elijah Wood is expected to reprise his role as Frodo in The Hunt for Gollum (2027), likely appearing via a bookend narrative or flashback sequence.

While The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is seemingly set on recasting most of Middle-Earth characters with younger actors, it appears that Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis will be the movie's familiar returning faces. That is, until McKellen seemingly confirmed that Frodo will also be returning...

Recently speaking to The Sunday Times, Elijah Wood was asked about potentially returning to Middle-Earth, and while he tried his best to avoid spoilers, the award-winning actor seems keen on leaving hints before anything's made official.

"It hasn't been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag. So there is a good chance," Wood teased, all but confirming his long-anticipated return, "I'm not able to officially say anything until it's announced, but I will say I'm thrilled with the prospect of another film."

Wood acknowledges that despite the "nerve-wracking" expectations fans have for the newly expanded world of Middle-Earth, he couldn't be more thrilled to join the cast.

"Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together."

Wood even seconded McKellen's words that he wouldn't want another actor to play Gandalf while he's still alive: "I totally get that. I certainly wouldn't want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I'm alive and able."

"And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be when you are in the cinema, and you see the hat turn around, and it's Gandalf," Wood added, "Because I'm also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together."

Even though the upcoming film focuses on the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo's presence raises interesting chronological questions.

Should Frodo return out of nowhere, fans worry that his appearance might rely on unnecessary nostalgia and instead create continuity issues (as most franchises face with sequels and prequels).

Considering that insider Daniel Richtman reported that the actor is still in talks to come back as Frodo, there might be a possibility to avoid clashing with the Middle-Earth timeline. Presumably, flashbacks where he and McKellen's Gandalf reunite somewhere during the original trilogy.

The Hunt for Gollum takes place in the 17-year period between Bilbo's farewell party (The Fellowship of the Ring) and Frodo's departure from the Shire, so there might be something there. Perhaps a small yet significant cameo that wouldn't overshadow the future of the franchise.

For now, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is slated for theaters on December 17, 2027. Stay tuned!
