Warner Bros. has reportedly put a pause on the development of a new Lord of the Rings movie co-written by Stephen Colbert.

Months before the end of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it was announced that the Emmy-winning comedian is working behind the scenes on a new movie in the Lord of the Rings franchise. Fans have been looking forward to seeing what kind of input he will have on the project and when they can expect its release.

However, it looks like the planned movie might be taking a step back for now.

A recent report from Knight Edge Media claimed that the new Warner Bros. under Skydance has hit the pause button on the development of Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, which has Stephen Colbert as one of the writers.

The decision came amidst the Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures merger under the newly formed Skydance.

However, it should be noted that the project has not been canceled altogether, and the writers are still working on script drafts. It only indicates that it's not a top priority for the new studio regime.

There were alleged plans that the project might be in production after The Hunt for Gollum wraps, but that is now unlikely to happen.

The report stated that Skydance is waiting for the reception of The Hunt for Gollum first before they'll decide whether they should move forward with Shadow of the Past.

As for the status of The Hunt for Gollum after the studio merger, it is not expected to have any impact, given that filming is already underway.

A representative from Warner Bros. has also clarified and reiterated that the project is not "canceled," and development is still ongoing.

Drawing heavily from J.R.R. Tolkien’s footnotes, the story of The Hunt for Gollum bridges the gap between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. It tracks Aragorn’s dangerous mission to find Gollum before Sauron can extract the Ring's whereabouts from him.

Returning from the previous films are Andy Serkis (as Gollum/Smeagol), Ian McKellen (as Gandalf), Elijah Wood (as Frodo Baggins), and Lee Pace (as Thranduil). Joining the cast are Kate Winslet (as Marigol), Leo Woodall (as Halvard), Jamie Dornan (taking over the role of Aragorn), and Anya Taylor-Joy.

The film is currently slated for release in theaters on December 17, 2027. Production is taking place in New Zealand.
