After X-Men: Apocalypse proved to be one of the weaker films in the franchise, fans were more than surprised to see James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence return for yet another movie. Lawrence, in particular, was surprising since she didn't show any enthusiasm for the role in Apocalypse, hence the surprise people had when the actress was announced for X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Well, if director Simon Kinberg is to be believed, the reason she and the other actors returned was Kinberg directing Dark Phoenix. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg claimed that a lot of the actors approached him for directing after it was made clear that Bryan Singer would not be returning. Lawrence even claimed that she wouldn't be in the movie unless Kinberg directs, which he eventually did.
Here's what Kinberg had to say:
Considering all of the controversy surrounding Singer, replacing him was the right way to go. Sophie Turner even claimed that she was uncomfortable working with him, so having him not be in the movie was a good idea. Hopefully, Kinberg does well in his directing debut since this will be the final X-Men movie from Fox.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix comes out on June 6.
