With Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) set to make his grand return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, does this mean he's back to donning the Captain America suit again?
Considering that he was never called his former hero name, MCU fans surmised that this timeline might see Steve Rogers as a Nomad, which we'll dive right into below!
Why is Steve Rogers Now Called a 'Nomad' in Avengers: Doomsday?
As much as Steve Rogers fans had long wished to see Chris Evans reprise his MCU role, his return in Avengers: Doomsday now feels like a cheap ploy that no one wanted to happen in the first place, especially after he chose to be with Peggy Carter.
However, one thing fans should notice from the trailer is the fact that he was never once called Captain America. This led fans who read original Marvel comics to theorize that we might be seeing his Nomad version on the big screens, instead.
In the comics, Steve Rogers first became a Nomad in December 1974, in Captain America #180, where he became disillusioned with the US government after discovering that a high-ranking official (heavily implied to be President Richard Nixon) was the leader of the corrupt, high-level terrorist organization known as the Secret Empire.
Considering that his moniker doesn't seem to justify what he stands for in the greater good of the universe, he abandoned the mantle and adopted the non-patriotic persona of Nomad, meaning "Man Without a Country."
Meanwhile, in the MCU timeline, Steve essentially became "Nomad" in spirit and look as early as Avengers: Infinity War.
As fans surmise from the trailer, we'll likely be seeing the established Nomad in Avengers: Doomsday, which could also ascertain one other fact:
Does Steve's Return Mean Taking Back the Captain America Mantle From Sam Wilson?
The short answer here might be no. As previously mentioned, the trailer never calls Steve his former hero name. Instead, he's just Steve this time, with his newborn son in his own alternate universe.

Steve Rogers' return means two things: Sam Wilson remains the main Captain America that Steve passed the torch to, and that Steve's comeback is for the greater good of the universe. If they're about to face one of the biggest big bads of the Multiverse, who would do better to face it than an old friend?
By old friend, we're talking Robert Downey Jr.'s comeback, this time, as a variant for none other than Doctor von Doom.
The official plot for Avengers: Doomsday remains under wraps, but given the casting of the massive team-up of Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom is a far scarier villain than Kang the Conqueror and Thanos ever were on the big screens.
In the meantime, fans can wait until Avengers: Doomsday comes out in theaters on December 18, 2026.
