Following the release of the final episode of Stranger Things, fans are now looking forward to the spinoff series and wondering which characters might return in the project.
Before the final season even premiered, The Duffer Brothers had been teasing that they were developing a spinoff project to the hit Netflix series that would expand the universe and the mythology. The details have been scarce, but fans are still excited to see more of the franchise and whether it will lead to the potential return of some of the fan-favorite characters.
Which Stranger Things Characters Are Returning in the Spinoff Series?

In a recent interview with Variety, The Duffer Brothers teased their plans for the spinoff series of Stranger Things and explained how the rock in the briefcase sets up the premise.
"I do want to explain, just because people’s expectations go in certain directions: The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it. But it’s a completely different mythology," Matt Duffer said.
"So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining. "
However, the showrunners have shot down the possibility of bringing back a character from the main series in the spinoff, as they intend to focus on new characters and a new town.
"I like the creative part. I like making it. So, we’re actually really excited, and it’s very exciting to work with a clean slate: completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology," Matt Duffer explained.
When asked whether there will be "no common characters" in the spinoff, Matt Duffer clarified, "Right. Exactly. No common characters."
Fans should not expect any returning characters from the main series in the spinoff, so don't count on the appearances of their favorites as the franchise expands.
What Happens in the Final Season of Stranger Things?
The final season of Stranger Things takes place in the fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished, and his whereabouts and plans are unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding.
As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming, and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone, the full party, standing together, one last time.
The entire main cast from the previous seasons returned to play their iconic roles one last time. The episodes were released across three volumes. The final episode aired last December 31, just in time for New Year's Day.
