The highly-anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked is taking the world by storm as long-time fans have been looking forward to seeing it come to the big screen.
While it only covered Act One, the film will feature some of the popular songs from the musical and you might be wondering whether you could watch a version where the musical numbers have subtitled lyrics. Fortunately, it will happen sooner than you might think.
When is the Release Date of the Wicked Sing-Along Version?
It was recently announced that the sing-along version of Wicked will be released in theaters on December 25, a month after the film's premiere.
The interaction version will be available in roughly 1,000 North American theaters. The exact locations and showtimes will be unveiled at a later date.
It is unknown yet whether this version will also be available in the international markets, but it will likely happen considering the film's massive success globally so far.
The sing-along version will feature subtitled lyrics on the musical numbers, and the audiences are allowed to sing the songs similar to a karaoke party/concert.
Most theaters right now are forbidding moviegoers to sing along on the screenings of Wicked as it is considered to be a distraction to the other patrons.
Fortunately, starting this Christmas, audiences can now sing along to "Defying Gravity" and "Popular" without any issue at all.
What is Wicked About?
Wicked is the film adaptation of the hit 2003 Broadway musical (and still ongoing) which itself is based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.
It is an untold story of the witches of Oz Elphaba (a young woman misunderstood because of her green skin who has yet to discover her true power) and Glinda (a young woman misunderstood because of her green skin who has yet to discover her true power).
The two meet as students at Shiz University and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.
The star-studded cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Marissa Bode.
The new film only covers Act One of the musical. Wicked: Part Two will be released in theaters on Thanksgiving next year.
