Wicked: For Good director Jon M. Chu recently explained why Dorothy's face will not be shown in the upcoming film, despite her pivotal presence.

One of the moments that fans have been waiting for in the second film is the official arrival of Dorothy, the main character of The Wizard of Oz. After teasing her appearance in the first film and the trailers for the upcoming film, fans have been eager to see who will play the beloved character and how her appearance will play out.

Why Dorothy's Face Will Not Be Shown in Wicked: For Good

In an interview with People, Chu confirmed that Dorothy's face will not be shown in Wicked: For Good and explained why he made that creative decision for the well-known character.

"I didn’t want to step on who you think Dorothy is in whatever story that you came into this with," he said. "[The film] is still Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, and she is a pawn in the middle of all of it."

The news may not be surprising for some fans since, in the original Broadway musical, Dorothy was only shown as a shadow.

However, when the first film showed a quick glimpse of Dorothy walking down the Yellow Brick Road, some fans were hoping that she would make a full appearance in For Good. Alas, that won't be the case after all.

While Dorothy's face will not be shown, there are familiar elements from The Wizard of Oz that will still be featured in the upcoming film.

Chu teased, "[Madame Morrible will be involved] in an iconic moment we all know from our youth [that was] not in the [musical]. We have this amazing moment of the tornado and how it gets conjured."

What to Expect in Wicked: For Good

Following the massive success of the first movie last year, Wicked: For Good will serve as the epic, electrifying, emotional conclusion to the adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.

According to the official synopsis: "Elphaba, now demonized as The Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile, hidden within the Ozian forest while continuing her fight for the freedom of Oz’s silenced Animals and desperately trying to expose the truth she knows about The Wizard."

"Glinda, meanwhile, has become the glamorous symbol of Goodness for all of Oz, living at the palace in Emerald City and reveling in the perks of fame and popularity. Under the instruction of Madame Morrible, Glinda is deployed to serve as an effervescent comfort to Oz, reassuring the masses that all is well under the rule of The Wizard."

"As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba will need to come together one final time. With their singular friendship now the fulcrum of their futures, they will need to truly see each other, with honesty and empathy, if they are to change themselves, and all of Oz, for good."

The cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. The film is set to release in theaters this November 21.
