The remake of the popular gender-bending romance comedy anime Ranma ½ was released this year. With Urusei Yatsura receiving a reboot in 2022, it seems that these past few years have been favorable for fans of iconic manga author Rumiko Takahashi.
That being said, the excitement doesn't end there. Recently, news about the production of Ranma ½ Season 2 has once again caught the attention of fans. Let’s take a closer look at the details below.
Is Ranma ½ Season 2’s Production Already Confirmed?
Ranma ½ Season 1 became available for streaming on Netflix on October 6, 2024, and ended on December 22 with 12 episodes.
Many believe it is a satisfying remake, with upgraded sound and visuals, faster pacing, and fewer fillers compared to the original that aired in the 80s. Naturally, fans are already eager to know when the second season will arrive.
Fortunately, the creators of Ranma ½ posted an announcement on their X account, confirming that the show has been renewed for Season 2.
The tweet also includes the first teaser trailer for the upcoming season. Fans were thrilled to hear Mousse’s voice at the end of the video, signaling his return to the series. However, the official release date was not mentioned in the announcement.
Season 1 concluded with Akane Tendo remembering Ranma, even after Xian Pu (Shampoo) used a special technique to give her amnesia. Shampoo’s unconventional methods to win Ranma’s affection continue, but since Ranma clearly disapproves, it is easy to see where his feelings may be headed.
MAPPA, the animation studio responsible for the first season, is also reportedly handling the second. While the quick renewal is reassuring, fans remain concerned about whether the next season will be released next year.
What We Know About Ranma ½ Season 2
There’s no doubt that Ranma ½ is a Rumiko Takahashi classic published in 1984, but the anime faced several challenges when it aired in the 80s and 90s.
Unfortunately, the original series was canceled after one season and 18 episodes due to poor ratings. However, it was relaunched a month later as Ranma ½ Nettōhen. This time, it reached a wider audience. Still, since the manga was ongoing during production, the anime suffered from slow pacing and excessive filler episodes.
MAPPA’s adaptation of Ranma ½ simplified things by adopting a faster pace and minimizing fillers. Credit goes to director Konosuke Uda, scriptwriter Kimiko Ueno for the hilarious writing, Kaoru Wada for the nostalgic and beautiful music, and Hiromi Tanaguchi for character designs that preserved the 80s aesthetic.
Even so, considering MAPPA’s reputation for juggling multiple breakout projects at once, it’s understandable that some are concerned about the progress of production. However, rumors are circulating that Season 2 is already wrapping up production. Many believe MAPPA is handling Takahashi’s creation with care.
For those who haven’t seen the 2024 Ranma ½ remake, the Japanese and English dubs are available for streaming on Netflix.
