How Many Episodes Does A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Have?

Set 90 years before the original timeline of Game of Thrones, this spinoff focuses on the peaceful era of Westeros, specifically, Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall and how he and his squire, Egg (Prince Aegon Targaryen V), will journey through Westeros to promote himself from hedge knight to a "real" knight of the seven kingdoms.

The spinoff series consists of six episodes for its first season, and fans can see the titles and release dates for each episode below:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 4: Recap and Ending Explained

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 4, titled Seven, sees Ser Duncan the Tall arrested within the Targaryens' walls after he attempted to save Tanselle from the cruelty of Prince Aerion. Despite being under the Targaryen radar, he refuses to believe this would be the end of his knighthood. And despite the betrayal from Egg, they may have a chance to reunite in the end.

So, the cat's out of the bag. The Egg, who promised to train as a squire for Ser Dunk, has now unveiled himself to be the wandering Prince Aegon V Targaryen. As much as Ser Dunk feels grateful to have been saved, it doesn't change the fact that his squire concealed this big a secret from him for this long.

When Egg reveals the truth, that he was looking to become a squire, Ser Dunk took this to heart, considering that their bond may not have been the reason for their squire-knight relationship. Instead, Egg used Dunk to fulfill his own dreams, leaving Dunk in the dark the entire time.

Why Did Prince Aerion Propose the Trial of the Seven Against the Hedge Knight?

Despite Prince Aerion's arrogance in facing any kind of knight in the tourney, he demanded a Trial of Seven to come up against Dunk.

The Trial of Seven is a rare, ancient tradition, and is only used when the common trial by combat seems insufficient. Prince Aerion wanted to make sure that Dunk would fail at finding six allies to help him in the trial, and plans on assembling his own team of skilled knights to bet that the hedge knight won't secure his own team.

Remember that people like Prince Aerion value pride over everything else. And he is making sure to win against the people he declares as enemies of their family.

As per the Trial of Seven, part of the process is that Dunk should scrounge six knights to fight by his side before his trial begins. And when it seemed all hope was lost, the gates opened, unveiling his formed team.

How Come Prince Baelor Targaryen is Siding with Ser Duncan the Tall in the Trials?

One of those knights happened to be Prince Baelor "Breakspear" Targaryen, who volunteered to fight for Dunk, highlighted to be a sign of triumph when the Game of Thrones theme song played upon his entrance. As for the rest of Dunk's supports:

  • Ser Lyonel Baratheon, who heeded Egg's call to help (he likes Dunk, after all, and wants to be a part of "something glorious")
  • Ser Raymun Fossoway, Dunk's friend, who hates the Targaryens and injustice
  • Ser Humfrey Hardying, the knight whom Aerion "unhorsed" in episode 3; despite being paralyzed after the fight, he can still sit on his saddle
  • Ser Robyn Rhysling, the half-mad, one-eyed knight, Egg met while he was practicing becoming a squire
  • Ser Humfrey Beesbury, the other Ser Humfrey's brother-in-law

As for the potential reason Baelor wanted to champion Dunk, he believes that any hedge knight who holds the true knighthood of honor must be given justice, too. Baelor believed in the true ideals of knighthood, considering Aerion's dirty tricks and unjust actions. Baelor wants to oppose his own cruel family members and be on the right side of history.

Meanwhile, Team Dunk will be facing Team Targaryen, the knights fighting for Prince Aerion's pride:

  • Prince Maekar Targaryen, his father
  • Prince Daeron "the Drunken" Targaryen, who promised Dunk he would get knocked off his horse and play dead to let them win
  • Ser Steffon Fossoway, who betrayed Dunk for a lordship
  • Ser Roland Crakehall, a member of the Kingsguard sworn to protect the prince
  • Ser Donnel of Duskendale, another member of the Kingsguard
  • Ser Willem Wylde (unnamed Kingsguard in the show), mentioned in George R.R. Martin's novella
