The new movie marks the return of the Star Wars franchise on the big screen after seven years of absence, as it focuses on Disney+ projects. The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the beginning of the return of the Star Wars franchise in the theatrical space. However, this time around, it won't focus on a Skywalker Saga-type slate and, instead, it will focus on releasing standalone movies.

Up next in the theatrical Star Wars slate is Star Wars: Starfighter, a standalone original story that takes place in a timeline that has never been explored in the franchise before. Shawn Levy directed the film, and it is slated for release in theaters on May 28, 2027.

The cast includes Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.

"I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally," Levy said in the announcement last year.

"Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime."

Lucasfilm is also developing other Star Wars movie projects such as the untitled Rey movie (with Daisy Ridley reprising the role), the untitled James Mangold movie, the untitled Taika Waititi movie, a Lando Calrissian movie, and a new trilogy produced by Simon Kinberg.

On the television side, fans can look forward to the release of the second season of Ahsoka. It is currently slated to premiere on Disney+ in early 2027. The main cast from the first season is set to return.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord recently ended its first season to acclaim from fans and critics. A second season is currently in the works.

There is no word yet on whether Lucasfilm will develop more new Star Wars live-action shows in the coming future, especially in the aftermath of the new leadership in the studio.

It also remains unknown whether there are plans to develop a fourth season of The Mandalorian following the release of the new movie.
