Lucasfilm just released a major bombshell at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 with the official confirmation that the beloved franchise will indeed return to the big screen very soon. Not only that but the sequel trilogy's lead star Daisy Ridley is also confirmed to be returning as Rey Skywalker in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's untitled film.

Kathleen Kennedy broke the news during the production company's movie panel (via Variety), with the project taking place generations after the sequels. As it stands, key details about "Episode X" remain undisclosed but the plot will revolve around Rey becoming a Jedi Master herself and forming a new Jedi Order, something that The Rise of Skywalker actually teased.

Interestingly, the project's release window was not announced but it's worth mentioning that it was eyeing a December 2025 premiere date. If you may recall, the film experienced a few hurdles before the announcement.

Just last month, Damon Lindelof exited the project along with co-writer Justin Britt-Gibson and while it remains unclear why they abandoned the project, rumor has it that Lucasfilm wasn't a fan of Lindelof's script.

As for Ridley, her return to the franchise no longer comes as a surprise as the actress has stated on numerous occasions that she's open to the idea of reprising her Rey Skywalker role. Daisy began sparking speculation late last year when she was even spotted at Lucasfilm's headquarters, although she quickly denied rumors about her comeback.

Of course, Rey's reemergence also comes as a no-brainer since the project is set post-The Rise of Skywalker. Hopefully, this will serve as Ridley's redemption because we all know what happened during her time in the sequel trilogy.

The official release date for the next Star Wars film is still being kept under wraps.
