Kpop Demon Hunters 2 is now in development on Netflix, and producer Michelle Wong has teased a possible storyline.

Following the success of the 2025 animated film, which earned critical acclaim, received several accolades, and became the streamer’s most-watched original title in history, it’s no surprise that Netflix and Sony finalised a deal to greenlight a second movie.

Now that the anticipation is high, what’s in store for Kpop Demon Hunters 2?

In an interview with The Direct, Wong revealed some story ideas she hopes to explore in Kpop Demon Hunters 2.

“I mean, for me, I'd like to explore Mira and Zoey's background and where they come from,” she said. “Or even Derpy, more about Derpy and Sussie's relationship.”

For context, the original movie introduced the three-member K-pop group HUNTR/X, composed of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey.

Their rivals included the villainous boy band Saja Boy and other memorable characters, like the tiger Derpy and the magpie Sussie, who was initially Jinu’s pet before shifting loyalty to Rumi following their human’s sacrifice.

As the first film focused on Rumi and her backstory, the sequel would be the perfect opportunity to put Mira and Zoey in the spotlight, alongside Derpy and Sussie.

These beloved animals didn’t get the screentime they deserved in the first film, so exploring their origins would be timely.

Who knows, revealing their backstory might even explain how Jinu could come back to life, thanks to their supernatural abilities and connections.

After the first film revealed Rumi’s origins as a half-demon and how she eventually overcame it, telling the backstories of Mira and Zoey could be the perfect storyline for Kpop Demon Hunters 2.

The original film already showed that Mira is the black sheep of her wealthy family and struggles with abandonment issues.

If the sequel explores this narrative, she may reflect on her outsider status and finally confront her past, ultimately embracing her HUNTR/X members as her newfound family.

In Zoey’s case, it was established that she has people-pleasing tendencies and insecurities about not being fully Korean, as she is a Korean-American raised in Burbank. Addressing this in the sequel could lead to significant character growth for her.

However, co-director Maggie Kan, who helmed the first film with Chris Appelhans, told Variety they had “set up so much for potential backstory.”

“Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes,” she said.

So, if the first film explored Rumi’s literal demon, the sequel may see Mira and Zoey facing their “figurative demons” – because not all demons are visible.
