Even though K-Pop Demon Hunters follows a K-pop girl group saving the world from demons, an English Catholic school is currently making headlines for banning its students from singing the original songs from Netflix's animated blockbuster.

Why Did the Catholic School Ban K-Pop Demon Hunters?

"Lilliput Church of England Infant School in Poole, Dorset, sent a message to parents on Friday saying some members of the community are 'deeply uncomfortable' with references to demons," the BBC wrote following reports that the school expressed concerns over certain song lyrics that were 'not in line with its Christian ethos.'

While the acting head teacher Lloyd Allington said he had since received feedback from parents highlighting the positive messages from the songs, the school seems to lean more on those who found the themes of K-pop Demon Hunters 'challenging.'

The school originally asked students "not to sing these songs at school" out of respect for those who do not agree with the song and film's message. However, the school ban also faced backlash from some parents who think otherwise.

"I thought it was ridiculous," one parent told the BBC, "My daughter is very into K-pop and all of her little friends love it."

Other parents also noted how the Netflix film's popular songs, such as the smash hit Golden, had positive effects on their children, which happened to help them build teamwork.

The school openly said that they fully respect the parents' rights to make their own choices and are not forcing them to stop listening to K-pop Demon Hunters' songs, but "for some Christians", the reference to demons "feels deeply uncomfortable because they associate them with spiritual forces opposed to God and goodness."

"Our role will simply be to help children understand that some of their peers may hold different views and to explore how we can respect and support those peers in upholding their faith," the school said.

K-pop Demon Hunters debuted in June on Netflix and has since become the streamer's most-watched movie of all time, garnering over 325 million views and counting. Three of its original songs, Golden, Your Idol, and Soda Pop, stayed on top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart for weeks, with Golden earning a Grammy nomination for song of the year.

While the animated flick initially had no plans for a sequel, Netflix and Sony confirmed that K-pop Demon Hunters 2 was happening after all, with plans to release the movie sometime in 2029.

"We've set up so much for potential backstory," franchise co-director Maggie Kang told Variety in July, "Obviously, there's a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there's only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes."
