What started as what looked like an innocent tweet about Mercury retrograde escalated into a major dispute between two of today’s biggest R&B artists, Nicki Minaj and SZA.

But what made the “Super Bass” rapper so irate over the “Snooze” hitmaker’s tweet? Let’s dig into the real roots of SZA and Nicki’s feud.

How Did SZA and Nicki Minaj’s Feud Begin?

Let’s start from the very beginning. Before SZA and Nicki began feuding, the 42-year-old rapper initially called out Punch, who also happens to be part of SZA’s Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) label.

Nicki accused Punch of bullying her “for no reason” and even claimed she had proof.

“So glad I have proof of being bullied by AND being lied on by a man PUBLICLY on a platform I use for my JOB; after I rejected his business proposition on more than one occasion,” she wrote on X on Tuesday, July 15.

Later, SZA posted a cryptic message about Mercury retrograde, which wasn’t set to begin until July 17 and would last through August 11. This astrological event is believed to affect people’s emotions and heighten feelings, often leading to increased sensitivity, anxiety, and mood swings.

“Mercury retrograde.. don't take the bait lol silly goose,” she tweeted.

Although she didn’t mention any names, Nicki took it personally and accused the “Kill Bill” singer of subtweeting her. In fact, she directly commented on the post, saying, “Go draw your freckles back on, bookie.”

From there, a social media feud erupted, with both Nicki and SZA exchanging insults on their respective pages.

What are SZA and Nicki Minaj Saying to Each Other?

After calling out SZA, Nicki went on to further criticize her appearance in a series of tweets.

“B---h looking & sounding like she got stung by a f--king bee,” she wrote. “Dot dot dot *Draws on my fake freckles.”

She also questioned SZA’s achievements in the music industry, particularly the success of her 2022 album SOS, which was certified nine times platinum in just over two years.

This milestone made SZA the only Black artist to spend over 80 weeks in the Billboard 200’s Top 10, even surpassing the likes of Michael Jackson.

However, Nicki downplayed the accomplishment, claiming SZA had to release “a whole new album as a deluxe to an already existing album” just to help the original break records.

“Like what in the insecure lack of morals & integrity you doing? I thought she was like a real artist? Girl bye,” she accused.

On the other hand, SZA has remained silent and has yet to directly address Nicki. However, when a fan warned her that Nicki’s fanbase, the Barbz, would come after her, she responded by saying she’s used to being bullied online but still manages to face fans in packed stadiums.

“I get bullied by millions online every day then step my ass out onna packed stadium tour where ppl show me REAL love . IN REAL LIFE,” she responded. “My parents are healthy and I’m the most successful I ever been . GET SOME F—KING PERSPECTIVE n BARK AT THE WALL !!!”

She also shared receipts showing that her SOS Tour had grossed $100 million—placing her alongside Tina Turner, Beyoncé, and Rihanna as one of the few Black women to reach that milestone with a tour.

This came after a fan urged her to go on a solo tour, since she’s currently co-headlining the Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar.

But as SZA bid farewell to her 8.7 million followers, saying she was returning to her “calm, shy, and meek” self, Nicki fired back, telling her to “shut up” and calling her “ugly.”

So, as Nicki continues to call out SZA, it seems this feud is far from over.
