Heath Ledger's Joker was introduced in 2008's The Dark Knight without a definitive origin. A big part of why fans were captivated with the character is that his past remains a mystery, with the scars on his face sparking various theories. However, Warner Bros. actually initially wanted him to have an origin story after all.

That is according to The Dark Knight co-writer David S. Goyer when he talked about the decisions for the film during a recent Comic-Con@Home interview. "I do remember when we were talking about, 'Well, what if the Joker doesn't really have an origin story?" he recalled. "Even after the success of Batman Begins, that was considered a very controversial thing, and we got a lot of push-back. People were worried."

Every Joker has had a different background and origin story in almost every adaptation. While it would have been interesting to learn more about Ledger's Joker, perhaps it's better to just keep it vague as it is. The Clown Prince of Crime's past is a major factor of why fans were intrigued by the character. Not knowing who he is and how he came to be that way makes it much more refreshing to have this villain remain a mystery forever.

The latest live-action movie incarnation of the character was in Todd Phillips' Joker, with Joaquin Phoenix as the titular villain.
