The process behind creating the Flash movie hasn't been very smooth so far. Ezra Miller, who plays the scarlet speedster, wants greater creative control over the story. He is reportedly unhappy about what John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein came up with.
So he decided to take matters into own hands in a bold move of teaming up with comic book legend Grant Morrison to write a darker take on the story. There is new word going around that Warner Bros. is ready to recast him if his script isn't up to par.
According to Full Circle Cinema, the company is so far happy with the "normal," funny story that the directors have whipped up. While Warner Bros. allowed Miller to write his own script, they would have no problem giving him the boot if his material doesn't work. After all, it is the simplest move they've got. Miller's contract for the Flash expires this May. After that, there's no stopping the studio from recasting him.
Miller is a fan of the Flash character. The fact that he put his own job on the line and reached out to Morrison shows that he truly cares and wants to make this film a success.
The thing is, this is also just what Warner Bros. wants for the project, but getting there becomes a different story. So far, it seems that the company is sticking with the new formula they have used for their more successful DC Comics releases--tone down the dark and double the funny. It's worked for Aquaman and possibly even Shazam!, which is already getting positive early reviews.
A darker Flash will definitely feel much different from the character we met in Justice League, since Barry Allen had the most funny moments in that film. If things don't work out, he would be the fourth star to walk, following Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, and Henry Cavill (although this one's not official yet). This will leave Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa as the only original cast members.
Should things fall into place, the Flash movie will be out 2020.
