It looks like Venom: Let There Be Carnage has overcome all expectations. The highly anticipated sequel was finally released last weekend and it has devoured Black Widow's pandemic-era record with a jaw-dropping $90.1 million opening weekend box office haul.
Venom 2 started out with a decent $10 million haul on Thursday but that has since improved greatly starting Friday. Amazingly, the Tom Hardy film has pushed through with an impressive $90.1 million over the three-day weekend, defeating Black Widow's previous pandemic record of $80.8 million.
Of course, the real pandemic record belongs to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings with $94.7 million on the four-day Labor Day weekend. However, its three-day record of $75.4 million still falls flat of Venom 2's haul.
It's no surprise that fans were eager to see Venom 2 this weekend. After all, the wait for the sequel has dragged on for a very long time due to COVID-19. Still, it's great to know that everything still worked out perfectly despite the delay.
The second Venom film brings back Hardy as Eddie Brock, the journalist who bonds with the extraterrestrial symbiote known as Venom. In the new film, the two are still adjusting to their co-habitation when they have to deal with another symbiote who has found a truly dangerous new host.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is directed by Andy Serkis and also stars Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Naomie Harris as Shriek, Reid Scott as Dan Lewis, and Stephen Graham as Patrick Mulligan. The sequel is currently screening in regular and IMAX theaters.
