Here's What Happened Before Tomo-chan Is a Girl! Episode 3
The second episode of Tomo-chan Is a Girl! takes a dark turn. Tomo and Jun sit together on a bus, but Tomo soon gets frustrated and stands up.
However, while doing so, she's groped by an old man which utterly disgusts her, but she hesitates to stand up for herself.
Tomo-chan Is a Girl! gets points for discussing this in a realistic but sensitive way.
Tomo's reaction is realistic; while she's normally not afraid of standing up for herself, she realizes the social implications of making a scene.
Unfortunately, the shame she feels is experienced by many females in this situation.
Thankfully, Jun stands up for Tomo, though things get awkward between them afterward.
He makes an unintentionally insensitive remark and eventually feels uncomfortable, as he comes to see Tomo as a girl, little by little.
Episode 2 introduces a new character named Carol Olston, a foreign transfer student who is very naĆÆve and unaware of how life works outside of her wealthy household.
She also happens to be engaged to Misaki, which causes her to immediately feel threatened by his friendship with Tomo.
For her part, Tomo feels very jealous when watching Carol interact with Jun.
Thankfully, the anime once again avoids harmful stereotypes by only letting this situation go on for about 1/4 of the episode.
Misuzu eventually befriends Carol and, upon finding that the latter is deeply lonely and desperate to make friends, she encourages her to befriend Tomo, which she does. It's really great to see female friendship winning over petty jealousy.
Plus, having Tomo be close to two other girls, who are both very feminine but in totally opposite ways, adds more layers to an already interesting rom-com anime.
