While Michael Keaton is seemingly eager to reprise his role as the Dark Knight in future projects, his frequent collaborator and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice director Tim Burton is not entirely on board with the prospect of helming a Batman threequel.
Tim Burton is NOT Interested in a Third Batman Flick Despite Clamor
The concept of an ever-evolving cinematic universe is no stranger in present times, and yet Tim Burton believes that his works, Batman and Batman Returns, have been lucky enough to grow beyond the DCU.
"I was lucky because at that time, the word 'franchise' didn't exist," Burton explained, "So Batman felt slightly experimental at the time. It deviated from what the perception [of a superhero movie] might be."
The helmer later added, "We really just got to focus on the film and not really think about those things that now they think about even before you do it."
His take rings true, considering that the forever expanding Star Wars, Marvel, and DC Universe all must align on the correct timeline and concepts all at the same time for their worlds to make sense.
Burton, while understanding the change of times and the potential behind directing a new Batman flick, is not interested in helming Dark Knight for the third time.
"At the moment, I would say no," the Academy-winning director said, "Like I said, I come at things from different points of view, so I would never say never to anything. But at the moment, it's not something I'd be interested in."
Keep in mind that Burton's words mean he might make a double-take in the future. After all, he did admit that Batman Returns wouldn't have existed if he hadn't found himself drawn to Penguin and Catwoman's compelling villainry.
However, with Matt Reeves' upcoming sequel to his The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, it might be more difficult trying to fit a third Michael Keaton-led version under DC Studios.
