Warning: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.
Unlike Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) who had actually died in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America (Chris Evans) was given the opportunity to return back into time and live out his life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). This has prompted speculation over Steve Roger's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe post Endgame.
However, as tempting as it seems to have Captain America return to the franchise, Evans says that he has already "emotionally moved on" from his role in the MCU, explaining that he isn't expected to reprise the role anytime soon.
Speaking in an interview with Happy Sad Confused, Endgame director Joe Russo was asked whether there was a chance for Cap to return to the franchise after the ending he was given in the Infinity War sequel.
"No, I think Chris — Chris is a very emotional person," Joe explained, "I think, maybe it's evident if you follow him on Twitter — because he does put his heart into what he says — but I feel like he has to close the door on things and emotionally move onto the next thing."
"There are no plans," Anthony Russo added.
"I think for now he's emotionally moved on, yes," said Joe.
As heartbreaking as it might be for fans, the Russo's closed Captain America's story beautifully, allowing the character to live the life that he'd always yearned for with Peggy Carter. Right now, it's very likely we'll get to see Falcon (Anthony Mackie) as the new Captain America, seeing as Steve decided to pass on the iconic shield to his comrade.
Avengers: Endgame is currently screening in cinemas.
