While Netflix is locking down on live-action adaptations for One Piece and Cowboy Bebop, Amazon is now taking a bite out of the anime apple and is going to produce an adaptation of this hit horror/mystery series from Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu.
According to Variety, Amazon is going to produce a live-action adaptation of The Promised Neverland. Amazon is apparently going for a series format, and the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-director Rodney Rothman will serve as showrunner. Heroes' Masi Oka is also attached as an EP for the show.
Here's the synopsis for The Promised Neverland:
A group of the smartest kids at a seemingly perfect orphanage uncover its dark truth when they break a rule to never leave the orphanage grounds. Once the truth is discovered, they begin to plan an escape to save all of the children.
Unlike Netflix's adaptations which are mostly action-heavy, Neverland promises to be something more involved with the story. It actually has a great mystery surrounding the entire plot, and the horror element is very unique. At some point, this could be Amazon's equivalent to Stranger Things; that is if they manage to pull it off.
It's actually pretty interesting that Amazon would choose this series to adapt, as the story is very unique when it comes to your typical anime.
No release date has been set for Amazon's The Promised Neverland yet, but you can actually check out the anime which is, ironically, on Netflix.
