- Quick Answer: Season 4 is written but waiting for MacFarlane's schedule to clear. Hulu is ready to proceed once his work on other major projects concludes.
After nearly four years, creator and star Seth MacFarlane has finally shared a long-awaited update on The Orville Season 4 – but there’s a catch.
While MacFarlane revealed that the potential fourth season has already been written, the show is not yet in production.
So, what exactly is holding The Orville Season 4 back?
Will The Orville Season 4 Happen?

There has been constant speculation about The Orville Season 4, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Since the end of Season 3 in 2022, the show has neither been canceled nor renewed.
While its future remains uncertain, MacFarlane shared a hopeful update about it.
“I will be honest with you: Season four is written,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s just a question of when we have the time to produce it.”
According to MacFarlane, the network isn’t the issue. In fact, Hulu is ready to move forward with the new season; it’s just that his schedule is holding things up.
“The 10 scripts are done,” he continued. “I’m the problem. It’s [a matter of] when I can make that my year, with all the other stuff we have in the works. But we can hit the ground running when it happens.”
MacFarlane certainly has a lot on his plate right now. In addition to promoting Ted Season 2, he’s working on Ted: The Animated Series.
That doesn’t even include his ongoing work on Family Guy and American Dad. So, until he frees up his schedule, The Orville Season 4 will have to wait.
What is The Orville Season 4 About?

While it remains unclear what The Orville Season 4 will be about, MacFarlane previously hinted that he may shift the show’s direction following the Season 3 finale.
If that happens, it wouldn’t be the first time MacFarlane has flipped the series’ story. In Season 2, the dangerous artificial race known as the Kaylon rose against what they viewed as “inferior” biological lifeforms, launching a rebellion across the galaxy.
However, Season 3 took a surprising turn. The Kaylon ultimately became uneasy allies of the Planetary Union, while the Moclans and Krill emerged as the season’s primary antagonists.
The third season, aptly subtitled New Horizons, even concluded with a wedding, effectively resetting the series and opening the door for new directions and storylines.
With that said, only time will tell whether The Orville Season 4 will officially move forward and what new course the story might take.
