There is little doubt that Chapter 14: The Tragedy was one of the most memorable episodes of The Mandalorian Season 2. After all, it featured the heartbreaking moment when Baby Yoda was taken away by Dark Troopers. However, that's not the reason why the episode gave the Star Wars series a chance to hit a major milestone. Interestingly, Boba Fett's epic return required for the scenes to be shot on location for the first time since the first season.
Much of The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 6 took place on the planet Tython where Baby Yoda was brought to an ancient Jedi Temple to bond with the Force. It was also here where Boba and Fennec Shand caught up with Mando and eventually fought off the Stormtroopers who came to kidnap Grogu.
Needless to say, that epic action sequence didn't take place indoors. Director of photography David Klein confirmed in the Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian Season 2 special that the cast and crew had to film the entire thing on location.
"We had to take the show to location for the first time because of its scope really. The Volume's incredible, but it has limitations," Klein said. "Whenever we're going to do direct sun we usually go to the back lot, but the backlot wasn't big enough for this so we ended up in Simi Valley."
That's right, that epic fight scene where Boba tore down a group of Stormtroopers was filmed out in Simi Valley. Although it looked amazing, it wasn't easy for the cast and crew at first.
"The terrain was so difficult, everything we wanted to take up onto those rocks we had to hand carry. It's dry up there in Simi Valley, we couldn't have any fire, no explosions; except for when Fennec's running on the rocks, those are practical, those are practical explosions," Klein said.
We're loving the idea that Boba's return led to a milestone for The Mandalorian. Needless to say, we can't wait to see him in action again in The Book of Boba Fett.
