  • Primary Subject: LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian
  • Key Update: Din Djarin and Grogu are returning to Disney+ in a brand-new animated LEGO Star Wars special.
  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: Din Djarin and Grogu will return to Disney+ in a LEGO Star Wars special, with more details releasing at D23 in August.

Din Djarin and Grogu's story is far from over, and The Mandalorian is set to return to Disney+–just not in the way fans might expect.

The Mandalorian & Grogu ended by setting up another chapter for the duo, with Grogu taking on a more independent and active role after receiving his own Beskar armor and continuing his adventures alongside Djarin. So, how will fans see the beloved pair again?

Unfortunately, Din Djarin and Grogu will not return in a new movie, The Mandalorian Season 4, or a direct sequel.

Instead, the duo will headline a brand-new LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian special.

Co-created by Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group, details about the project remain under wraps, but fans can expect to learn more during its early presentation at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, taking place August 14-16 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

While the format may come as a surprise, it could prove to be a smart move following The Mandalorian & Grogu's mixed critical reception and underwhelming box office performance.

It also helps that the LEGO Star Wars brand has built a strong reputation with recent specials such as Rebuild the Galaxy and Pieces of the Past, both of which were generally well received by fans.

Those specials also brought back beloved Star Wars characters in unexpected ways, including Rey and Luke Skywalker.

And because the LEGO specials exist outside the main Star Wars canon, the creators have far more creative freedom to experiment with fun concepts–such as the fan-favorite "Darth Jar Jar."

Whether LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian will also exist outside the official canon remains to be seen.

However, if it follows the same approach as previous LEGO projects, it could offer a more flexible and lighthearted adventure for Din Djarin and Grogu, allowing the special to explore ideas that wouldn't be possible in the main continuity.

Grogu

After its lackluster box office run, The Mandalorian & Grogu is finally heading to digital platforms.

Following its theatrical debut on May 22, the film will be available to rent or purchase on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home beginning July 21. It will also receive a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release on August 25.

In addition to the film itself, the digital and physical releases include several bonus features, including behind-the-scenes featurettes that showcase how Grogu was brought to life.

One featurette reveals that it takes a team of six puppeteers to operate Grogu, with different crew members controlling various parts of the character, including his eyelids, ears, and facial expressions.

The behind-the-scenes footage proves co-writer and producer Dave Filoni's comments that one of the film's goals was to "push the limitations of Grogu," whom he described as "a great little actor."

"Grogu and the Legacy team, as a collective, they are the most organic scene partners that anyone could wish for," Pedro Pascal said, praising the visual effects and puppeteering team.

Star Wars newcomer Sigourney Weaver, who plays Colonel Ward, also shared her affection for the beloved character.

"I am in love with Grogu. I know there are people on the floor and all around him, but all I see is his little face," Weaver said. "You cannot help but fall in love with that little face."
