- Quick Answer: Jonny Coyne was booked for multiple Season 4 episodes before it was scrapped for the film, where his character became a main villain.
Jonny Coyne has been revealed as one of the key villains in The Mandalorian & Grogu, but the actor himself says he was originally meant to play a major role in the planned fourth season of The Mandalorian.
Appearing as Lord Jannu Coin, Coyne first showed up as an unnamed Imperial warlord and member of the Shadow Council in The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 7, “The Spies.”
However, plans for a fourth season were ultimately scrapped after Disney and Lucasfilm decided to move forward with The Mandalorian & Grogu instead. So, what role was Coyne originally supposed to play in The Mandalorian Season 4?
What was Jonny Coyne’s Supposed Role in The Mandalorian Season 4?

Jonny Coyne returns as Commander Coin in The Mandalorian & Grogu, going up against Mando (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu.
But aside from the film, the Alcatraz star was also expected to return for The Mandalorian Season 4.
“There was a time when I was booked to do a whole load of other episodes in Season 4,” he told GamesRadar. “And then that show went away, and then there was an actors’ strike, and then COVID, and all sorts of things going on. It was a difficult time.”
Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the shifting plans at Disney and Lucasfilm, Coyne believed he would never return to the Star Wars universe, assuming The Mandalorian had effectively ended.
However, his fate changed when he learned he would be part of the film.
“And then I heard I was going to be part of the movie, and then I heard I was going to be seriously part of the movie–significantly,” he revealed. “Then Jon Favreau called me up, interviewed me, and talked to me about what he plans to do with the character, and I thought, ‘Okay, bring it on.’”
What was The Mandalorian Season 4 Supposed to be About?

Jonny Coyne admitted that he never had the chance to see the scripts for The Mandalorian Season 4. However, he explained that after delivering just three lines in the series, it paved the way for his character to be included in The Mandalorian & Grogu.
While the original plans for the fourth season of Disney+’s flagship show remain under wraps, and a new script was reportedly developed for the movie, the similarities and differences between the two remain unknown.
However, with Coyne set to play a major role in Season 4 and eventually becoming one of the key villains in the film, it suggests that some story elements may have been carried over into the movie.
“So, I'm thinking maybe there was something along these lines in the series, but who knows,” he added.
In The Mandalorian Season 3, Coyne’s character only said, “plundering the hyperspace lanes,” while discussing the potential fortune it could bring.
This shows his interest in the return of the Empire and in accumulating wealth, including the money involved with Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White) in Shakari’s fighting pits.
It’s also worth noting that his character is the mysterious Imperial warlord whom the New Republic’s Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) sends Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal, Brendan Wayne, and Lateef Crowder) to capture.
So, while it remains to be seen whether The Mandalorian Season 4 or another movie will be made, there is still a strong possibility of Coyne’s return, as his character is now a captive of the New Republic who has already begun divulging Imperial Remnant secrets.
