The Last of Us Episode 9 has just concluded the HBO show’s first season, and while fans are aware of a The Last of Us Season 2 happening ahead of its ending, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have cryptically confirmed that The Last of Us doesn’t end with Season 2.
“[The Last of Us] is more than one season,” Druckmann said in a recent interview with GQ magazine. When asked on how many seasons the creators have planned, Mazin added, “You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.”
The showrunners also confirmed that they do not plan on sticking to the storyline of The Last of Us Part II, which is set to introduce new characters such as Dina and Abby. Apparently, Druckmann and Mazin plan on prolonging the series by not ending Part II all in on The Last of Us Season 2.

It is worth noting that Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II had a massively negative reception, especially since it took back a lot of what The Last of Us Part I aimed to show. Given that The Last of Us Episode 9 / season finale’s last decision will transition over to The Last of Us Season 2, fans are in for a rollercoaster.
Druckmann and Mazin, throughout the series, have done nothing but fill the gaps in between. While this type of gap-filling is normally considered a dragging tactic for fans, their scripts have been no less of interesting and reeling in more viewers as the series grew with more episodes.
Seeing that they are planning to extend more on what The Last of Us Season 2 will hold, I doubt fans will have anything to worry about once we see the return of Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie soon.
Meanwhile, all episodes of The Last of Us Season 1 are now available to stream on HBO Max.
