The Last of Us is an award-winning video game that was first released in 2013, developed by Naughty Dog, produced and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The hit game inspired several prequels through the years and by 2023, the live adaption of the game was released.
Two weeks prior to The Last of Us season 1's premiere on Max, season 2 was greenlit and began its production and filming on February 12, 2024.
Here's everything we know about the release date news for The Last of Us season 2.
The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date
Fans don't have to wait anymore as Warner Bros. has finally unveiled our first looks at Joel Miller (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) coming into The Last of Us season 2!
Video game players will recognize the scene Joel is in, the party where he had to protect Ellie after hecklers hailed homophobic slurs against Ellie while dancing with Dina.
Meanwhile, Ellie is about to embark on a new journey: a much gore-ish, bloodier one as she takes the second season by storm with her revenge story.
The Last of Us season 2 has no official release date yet but is set to premiere sometime in 2025, with the returning cast including Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller and Rutina Wesley as Maria Miller.
Potential Issues The Last of Us Season 2 Might Face
Similar to several TV shows that previously halted their filming and production, The Last of Us season 2 faced delays when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike occurred.
Thankfully, ahead of the strike, show creator Neil Druckmann had already "outlined all of season 2" and that they were "ready to go as soon as the strike ends."
Another potential issue season 2 is (currently) facing is backlash from fans, which is not that different from what season 1 experienced.
In The Last of Us season 1, some fans were enraged that episode 3 titled Long, Long Time portrayed an LGBTQ story between Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett), even though the original video game hinted at their past love affair.
This second season, fans are concerned about Bella Ramsey playing a 19-year-old Ellie, when she has not aged much from portraying the 14-year-old version.
Keep in mind that she's going to be fiercer and much more brutal than how season 1 portrayed her, which begs the question of whether or not aging Ellie on the show would still do great for the impact of the storytelling.
What To Expect from The Last of Us Season 2
The Last of Us season 2 will turn things around for Joel Miller and Ellie as the ending of season 1 sinks in for the kid: Joel stole her away before she could help humanity with her immunity.
Ellie will face a tragic loss in season 2 as she navigates the world of Clickers with Dina and eventually meets the surprising foe from a different group, Abby Anderson.
Abby Anderson is one of the main protagonists in The Last of Us season 2, but not in the way you think. She and Ellie are on the same path to revenge that intertwines their encounter.
Little did Joel and Ellie know that Abby is out here for payback.
Considering that the show creator tends to change things up a bit from the canon Naughty Dog story, expect minor changes that could affect the upcoming storyline of Ellie's journey on-screen.
