Martin Scorsese is one of the best filmmakers out there, managing to make a number of movies about a bunch of angry white men several times and still getting tons of praise for it. All kidding aside, Scorsese's The Irishman has a lot of people excited but he had felt the wrath of some geeks recently after claiming that Marvel movies weren't cinema and double down on those comments recently.
Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and loved/hated by geeks everywhere, feels that fans are blowing Scorsese's comments out of proportion. Johnson admits that he likes artsy movies and blockbusters like Marvel but thinks Scorsese should be entitled to his opinion (spoilers, he's right).
During an appearance in the BFI London Film Festival (via ComicBook.com), Johnson had this to say about Scorsese's comments:
"I'm on Twitter too much, anyone who is on Twitter is on Twitter too much and I will say, I mean, I think that, you know, I love film Twitter. I'm very entertained by it and I think there is also a pattern of outrage that is very much just a pattern and it's just a slightly commodified, slightly gamified pattern that happens, taking a fragment of an interview, putting the craziest part of it in a headline and getting everybody to tweet, you know, 'f*** you' back and forth about it. And the thing is that can be entertaining. It also starts to get boring after a while, I think. Look, like I said, anyone -- Scorsese in particular -- can think whatever they like about the movies. I'm someone who loves small stuff, I also love big stuff, I love franchise stuff, too."
As someone who doesn't agree with Scorsese's comments, the man is entitled to what he says. The man paid for his ticket and couldn't get into it, though dismissing an entire series of movies is a bit mean. Still, Scorsese can say what he wants and fans are allowed to discuss it, as long as they're respectful.
Rian Johnson's Knives Out will be showing on November 27. Black Widow, the next Marvel film, will be coming out on May 1, 2020.
