The Batman Director Teases Penguin Spinoff's Connection to the Sequel

With the success of The Batman last year, Warner Bros. and Matt Reeves are currently working on more projects surrounding the franchise including a sequel and an HBO Max spinoff series centering on Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot titled The Penguin. The latter has a lot of fans excited since they will get to spend more with the beloved titular character from the first film.

However, some fans have also been wondering whether the spinoff series will also have a connection to the sequel and serve as a bridge between the two films besides being an expansive character study of the villain. Fortunately, it looks like it is indeed the case after all.

Speaking with Collider, Reeves confirmed that The Penguin will have some tie-ins to The Batman 2. While he didn't specifically explain how they will connect, he did iterate that it's all part of what they want to do on expanding the franchise's universe.

"There's actually a whole little fabric of things we're wanting to do, the way we're doing with [the] Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be," he said.

Based on Reeves' comments, it sounds like the spinoff series will be an essential watch in order to fully understand the sequel. Considering the reception that it has received, perhaps the audience wouldn't really mind seeing more of The Batman universe beyond the big-screen projects.

Lauren LeFranc (Agents of SHIELD) is serving as the showrunner of the series. She will also executive produce alongside Farrell, Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan, Rafi Crohn, and Craig Zobel, who will also direct the first two episodes. Cristin Milioti also co-stars.
