Did you know Colin Farrell almost missed out on playing the Penguin in Matt Reeves' The Batman?
Had the DCU project for Sgt. Rock not been canceled, Farrell was set to play in a superhero war movie. Here's what the Oz Cobb star said.
Why Did Colin Farrell Almost NOT Play the Penguin in The Batman?

During a recent appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, The Batman star Colin Farrell, who plays the Penguin, explained what really happened to his previous Sgt. Rock project, where he was initially set to headline before it got canceled.
"That was a fantastic script. I wonder what's happening with it," the Oz Cobb star said, adding that he "knows nothing" about it and that he "was going to do it with Luca [Guadagnino]. We spoke about it a couple of times and had some really nice chats."
Farrell shared, "I have no idea where it is now, but it should be made. It's really, really good. There's some wonderful stuff in it."
If not for The Batman, Colin Farrell would have starred in the World War II film as soldier Franklin "Sgt." Rock and his "Easy Company" on a mission to retrieve the Spear of Destiny before the Nazis. But here's what really happened and why DC Studios chose not to push through.
What Happened to DCU's Superhero War Movie?

As far as James Gunn's DCU goes, no project moves forward until the script is finalized and progresses toward the first chapter slate of Gods and Monsters. Sgt. Rock was canceled on April 30, 2025, since DC Studios decided not to move forward with the movie for the time being.
The script was penned by Justin Kuritzkes, who has worked with Guadagnino on Challengers. At one point, the Sgt. Rock movie was rumored to be eyeing Mikey Madison for the female lead.
Meanwhile, fans can wait for the DCU timeline to continue in 2026, kicking off with Supergirl on June 26, Clayface on September 11, and then the premiere of Lanterns on HBO in the same year.
