It's been a year since The Acolyte concluded, but there's still discourse within the Star Wars fandom as to what really led to the show's premature end, with no currents plans of getting a second season renewal.
The most common assumption is that the spinoff series was "too woke" as it featured a female lead and people of color. However, it turns out that there's no truth to it. In fact, The Acolyte was one of Disney's most successful offerings and was both a ratings and critical success.
So, why wasn't it renewed for a second season? Find out here!
What's The Real Reason for The Acolyte's Cancelation?
There's a good chance many of you missed it, but last December, Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman revealed that the production company decided to pull the plug on a potential The Acolyte Season 2 due to concerns about cost-efficiency.
Bergman explained: “So as it relates to Acolyte, we were happy with our performance.” He added, "But it wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure of that title, quite frankly, to go and make a season two. So that’s the reason why we didn’t do that."
Unbeknownst to some fans, the Amandla Stenberg-led series cost $230 million to make, going over its initial budget of $180 million. This made the series Lucasfilm's second highest-budgeted project, only next to Andor, which cost $250 million to produce.
For comparison, other shows like Star Wars Skeleton Crew reportedly cost $136 million, while The Mandalorian cost roughly $120 million per season.
Is The Acolyte Season 2 Still a Possibility?
As it stands, it's hard to tell whether or not Disney would consider bringing back The Acolyte. While the series left plot threads open that potential installments could explore, greenlighting a second season isn't exactly the most cost-efficient thing to do, at least currently. But never say never, right?
