It looks like Chris Hemsworth's Thor is still going to remain as Asgard's God of Thunder even when he appears in Taika Waititi's second Thor movie, Love and Thunder.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at Disney's D23 Expo over the weekend, Waititi decided to clear up one of the fans' biggest questions about Love and Thunder – would Natalie Portman's Jane Foster be taking the Thor title from Odinson?
According to the director, Odinson wouldn't become unworthy and lose his title in the movie, instead, Foster would join him in the pantheon of Thors.
"[She's] a Thor. There's still the other Thor, the original Thor [played by Hemsworth]," Waititi told the publication at the convention, "She's not called Female Thor. In the comics, she's called the Mighty Thor. It comes from that comic run. I couldn't be more happy and excited."
Fans were a bit confused by Love and Thunder's premise, believing that it would closely follow The Mighty Thor comics from Marvel. In the comic book series, Odinson becomes Unworthy of Mjolnir because of a scheme by Nick Fury, and the power was then passed on to a cancer-stricken Jane Foster who decided to take on the mantle even though turning into Thor would only exacerbate her illness.
Based on Waititi's comics, it seems like Love and Thunder will forge its own path in the Marvel Cinematic Universe- though we're not quite sure how it might turn Jane Foster into one Worthy to become Thor. Let's wait and see.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to premiere on November 5, 2021.
